UA830 - Hydraulic Leak Forces Turnback
United Airlines flight UA830 departed Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) at 12:01 p.m. AEDT on 11 March 2024 bound for San Francisco International Airport (SFO). About one hour into the flight, passengers observed fluid streaming from the right wing root. The pilots declared a mayday and stopped the climb at around 25 000 feet before turning back toward Sydney. The Boeing 777‑300ER landed safely at Sydney at 2:25 p.m. after dumping fuel and was met by emergency services. United Airlines stated that the leak involved hydraulic fluid and not fuel, refuting early social media speculation. All 167 passengers and 16 crew were unharmed; they were booked on alternative flights later that day or the following day. Australia’s air safety regulator and United Airlines began investigating the cause of the leak.
