AI171 - Air India Boeing 787-8 Fatal Crash
Air India Flight 171, operated by a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner (registration VT-ANB), departed from Ahmedabad Airport (AMD) bound for London Gatwick Airport (LGW) on June 12, 2025, at 13:39 IST (08:09 UTC). The aircraft carried 230 passengers and 11 crew members. Approximately 32 seconds after takeoff, both fuel control switches moved to the CUTOFF position, causing total engine power loss. The aircraft crashed into a hostel block of B.J. Medical College, located 1.7 km from the runway. The impact and subsequent fire resulted in 241 fatalities among aircraft occupants, with one passenger surviving. Ground casualties totaled 19 fatalities and 67 serious injuries. This incident marks the first fatal accident and hull loss involving the Boeing 787 since the aircraft type entered commercial service in 2011. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) of India is leading the investigation with assistance from the NTSB.
