5X61 - Engine pod strike during typhoon landing
On August 13, 2025, UPS Airlines Flight 5X61, a Boeing 747-8F cargo aircraft registered N613UP, experienced an engine pod strike during landing at Taipei Taoyuan International Airport (TPE). The flight was operating from Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) to TPE when it encountered severe weather conditions caused by Typhoon Podul. During the third landing attempt at 12:09 UTC on runway 05L, strong gusting winds up to 191 kph (119 mph) caused the aircraft to descend with the right wing lowered. The number 4 engine (outboard right) nacelle contacted the runway surface, creating a shower of sparks and sustaining damage to the engine cowling. Despite the engine damage, the flight crew successfully landed the aircraft and taxied to the apron. The aircraft, which was 6.83 years old and had been delivered new to UPS in October 2018, sustained damage to the right wing, fuselage, and engine nacelle. No injuries were reported as this was a cargo-only flight with crew members only. UPS confirmed awareness of the incident and stated they are cooperating with investigative authorities. Taiwan's Transportation Safety Board opened an investigation into the incident.
