DL1708 - Engine Smoke Rejected Takeoff
Delta Air Lines Flight DL1708, operating a Boeing 717-200 (registration N928AT) from Huntsville International Airport (HSV) to Atlanta International Airport (ATL), experienced engine smoke during the takeoff roll on August 29, 2025. The aircraft was accelerating on runway 18R when the flight crew observed smoke emanating from one of the engines at approximately 10:55 AM local time. Following standard safety procedures, the crew immediately performed a low-speed rejected takeoff, vacating the runway at the first available exit approximately 380 meters down the runway and stopping clear of the active runway. Passengers reported hearing a loud bang during the incident, with one passenger suggesting it may have been a compressor stall. Emergency services were requested and responded to the scene but found no unusual external signs from the engines upon inspection. The aircraft taxied to the apron with emergency services following, and all 114 passengers and 5 crew members deplaned normally at the gate with no injuries reported. The aircraft was immediately grounded for inspection, and the FAA has opened an investigation into the incident. This incident is part of a pattern of smoke-related issues with Delta's Boeing 717 fleet in 2025, with similar incidents occurring earlier in the year.
